 Course Description

  • This course is designed to enhance agricultural awareness with an emphasis on horticulture.
    The course focuses on careers, plant physiology, soils, nutrients, fertilizers, innovative
    gardening techniques, and pest management. Work-based learning strategies appropriate
    for this course are provided through supervised agricultural experiences and field trips. FFA
    leadership activities, meetings, conferences, and competitions provide opportunities for
    application of instructional competencies. 
  • This course provides instruction on the broad field of horticulture with emphasis on the scientific and technical knowledge for a career in horticulture. Topics in this course include plant growth and development, plant nutrition, media selection, basic plant identification, pest management, chemical disposal, customer relations, and career opportunities. English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course are apprenticeship, cooperative education, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, job shadowing, and supervised agricultural experience. FFA competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.

  • Unit 4.00: Examine Factors Relating to Plant Growth and Development
  • Unit 5.00: Explain Properties of Soils
  • Unit 6.00: Explain the Role of Nutrients and Fertilizers
  • Unit 7:00: Apply Procedures to Plant a Garden
  • Unit 8:00: Compare Distinguishing Characteristics of Pests
  • Unit 9:00 Explain Integrated Pest Management and Pesticides

  • Test/ Projects: 20%
  • Quizzes: 25%
  • Classwork/ Participation: 55%

State Testing

Students are required to complete tasks illustrating Performance-Based Assessment. These Performance-Based Activities will demonstrate students’ understanding of topics learned throughout this course.

 Student Organization

FFA is an important part of the Agriculture Program. Students get the opportunity to visit college programs, compete in events in agriculture, network with peers and individuals in the industry and attend conferences. Students are highly recommended to join. Participation can lead to internships, awards, and scholarships.
