What is Canvas?

Canvas is an cloud-based program that gives students access to the course materials. The instructor will most likely post a syllabus, calendar, lectures, assignments, and quizzes (assessments) in Canvas. Students may also be required to communicate with their peers in discussions and group projects as well. Please note each course will be different and not all instructors will use all of the tools covered in this training course.

The Different Course Formats

There are three primary course formats Instructors at Lake Land College use when using Canvas as part of the course delivery for students.

Online courses - All course content is delivered or access through in Canvas. Students will submit homework assignments and quizzes online. Many courses will require students to participate in discussion topics related to the course content. Some online courses may require the use of additional web based software or campus visits for labs or proctoring of exams. Check with your instructor to see what is required.

Hybrid - Some course content is delivered and completed online in Canvas. Students will attend weekly course meetings on campus. Be sure to check the course details in IRIS for dates and times when the class meets.

Blended/Enhanced Courses - Some instructors will use Canvas to deliver some supplementary materials online and/or post grades in Canvas for courses with weekly meeting times on campus. Not every instructor will use Canvas so some courses may not be published in the course list. Check with your instructor if you are not sure if Canvas is required.
